About my new book: “Aphrodite on Metzizim Beach”

The book was published on August 26, 2021, by “Eucalyptus” Publishing, arrived in stores after the holidays – on October 4, 2021

Short Stories, by Nurit Manor

In “Aphrodite on Metzizim Beach” Nurit Manor weaves different stories – funny, moral, fantasy, nostalgia, autobiography and adventures. (Hebrew)

Each story takes the reader into a different direction and angle of life. There are short stories that develop in silent steps, there are mystery stories, there are poetic and Zen stories.

Each story is accompanied by an illustration, engraving or photograph, which brings a visual aspect to the text, and takes the reader into a Journey. The drawings created by the author, in Black and white.

Eucalyptus grove, Quick drawings, 2019

A young man arrives at Metzizim Beach in Tel Aviv and meets Aphrodite. A woman travels around India and experiences an extraordinary meeting with her dead father. In another story, a young woman cries out an universal cry, in the name of the silent citizens. There is a story of a courages of a woman in Abarbanel, a psychiatric hospital, a story about a trip to a music festival in the south of France and more.

“The hedgehog and the hawk”, illustration for the story
“Till Death us do part”, lino cut, 2017

The stories take place in Israel and in different parts of the world, and the reader assimilates into the landscape, ideas, and grasps the experiences of the heroes, and breathes real life stories.

“Buddha on the Ganges”, oil on wood. I painted Buddha in the library, a wooden hut, at the Mahatma Yoga Ashram, in Rishikesh. 2016.

The thread that connects all the stories – human love, human acceptance, the hand of chance and the mysteries of fate.

Mahatma Yoga Ashram, Rishikesh

Ganga River and Rishikesh at night [Crayons on note book]

The first time I arrived in Rishikesh was in April 2008, it was LOVE of first sight. The sights, colours, sounds and the gentleness of the people caught me.

First few steps on Laxman-Jula Bridge, Rishikesh 8.4.2008

I traveled alone but thanks to Shiva and to the Good Spirits, that I felt safe and comfortable, like I have been in India before.

Lino Cut, Rishikesh, 2019

There are some miracles in life, and my work on that Lino, on 2019 of Rishikesh is one of them.
Every evening at sun set I used to bring my tools to the best point of view in the Ashram and did my work. Some times people looked at me with strange looks, but I continued. That was like I was ordered to do it with no excuses.
And so I created day by day – the stormy waters of the Ganga, the Ashram opposite with the round arches that’s never finishes, Shiva’s majestic and glorious statue that was the place for gathering and praying and the soft most beautiful mountains around that were like cuddling us. Thanks to Shiva and the universe that I managed to finish the work.

Rishikesh is a Holly city and pilgrims arrived from all over india.

Visited it regularly from 2008 – 2019

I was lucky to find in my next visit – The Mahatma Yoga Ashram, run by Yogi Ji. That was like finding my second home.

My next project in Mahatma Yoga Ashram was painting the gats. Bright lovely colours were most suitable for the amazing atmosphere in the Ashram. 2015

Sadly because of the pandemic Mahatma Yoga Ashram, by the Ganga river, closed down on Feb. 2020. The Ashram was active for 10 years.
The Reading Hat flew away by a Hurricane storm sometime on 2018
.

The final project on my last visit on 2019, was an idea by Yogi Ji
who wanted to create a beautiful background with local stones and a Shrine
to welcome the guests lovingly.

The guests at the ashram came from India and from all over the world.
The Yoga classes in Mahatma Yoga Ashram were the best in town, with excellent teachers.
Yogi Ji the founder and the manager of the Ashram, was a unique teacher and spiritual leader. He taught sacred wisdom in a humble way, wearing ordinary, gave happiness and hope to every soul.

Rainbow – a metaphysical, spiritual and emotional form

I started working on “Rainbow”, because of my interest in our mental connection to the metaphysical form that appears in the sky, in spectacular colors and disappears so quickly. But mysteriously always brings us happy and comforting feelings.

At the sight of Rainbow, I always have thoughts about the universe and us – being one.

I am looking at the Rainbow, longingly, admiring its beauty and hoping it’ll stay painted on the sky as for long as possible. As a kid I wanted to find a way to catch it, so it would not disappear but stay forever.

Rainbow 1
Nov. 2014. Wood, steel, oil

One day on 2014, I found a wooden pallet thrown on a sideways road. It was broken and bruised. From the first glance I knew that pallet would turn into a Rainbow.
Iron straps and screws are the ones that will hold the rainbow together! After all, I always wanted to catch a rainbow. 😘

Rainbow 1: Yellow, red, greenish, turquoise, bright blue and silver. Materials: Wood, metal rods & screws & oil paint. The silver symbolizes the infinite sky and infinity from which the Rainbow appears and then disappears.

A moment of excitement when the construction of Rainbow 1 is ready
Rainbow 2, Los Angeles

My need to lock the Rainbow with metal and screws is symbolic for unfulfilled desire to preserve the bow for ever.

Rainbow 2: Purple, blue, green, yellow, orange, red and silver

Rainbow 3

In the book of Genesis, it is most significant that after the Mabul (the big flood), The Rainbow is the tangible symbol of God’s promise that another flood will never come down on earth again.

The perfect shape of the Rainbow as a semicircle, part of a circle, or even as a line, combined with the spectacular colours projected on it, can bring us to the point of transcendence!
The sight of the rainbow rises even higher in The Book of Kings, in which the Rainbow equals the sight of the figure of God.

Rainbow 5
Full spectrum

The perfect shapes of the Rainbow with its most beautiful colours that appear and disappear, reflects perfection and brings us closer to our childhood-soul and to dreamy optimistic feelings.

Rainbow 4
Compressed cardboard, in work progress

As rainbow radiates spiritual feelings, I thought that creating a Rainbow should be made out mainly of recycled materials. So I choose to work with wooden pallets and compressed cardboard. (as above and below, Rainbow 4, 6)

My Shadow & Smoky Gaza Strip

One can feel and see injustices even through a Rainbow. The above work – Rainbow 8, is homage to a friend and the people of Gaza Strip, also to the people of Gaza, who wants to see their sky – smoke-free sky.

Quick Life Drawings

Drawing a model is always a challenge, it’s refreshing and inspiring.

Quick life drawings are exciting and challenging – it means capturing the model’s mood, the model’s character, all together as well as the artist’s mood. Also there is the challenge of putting up like a foot-step on the paper of the right atmosphere of the event.

Yael. 2012

The model actually is a tool for the artist. Drawing the human body is the best mind & hand coordination exercise. Drawing a model expresses more than anything the artist’s mood.

One can draw even a “Self Portrait” under the “cover” of a model.

Carmel. 2014

To draw a nude model can take the artist closer to the essence of himself. Scratching the paper means like it’s his own skin; drawing an inner reflection.

Regina. 2019
Eva. 2019
Amit. 2012

Drawing a model is a pure and intimate way to bring up topics that the artist wants to raise. Choosing the style is part of the statement. The free expressive work with a model is also inspiring for other ideas and works that the artist is engaged with; it’s like solving mathematical formula via the figure.

A story of violence sex and success. 2018
I am me. 2018
Angelica. 2018

The artist expresses his ideas, his own thoughts by unveiling characteristics of the model’s character.

The Reservist

Feeling the loneliness of The Reservist – in a sea of flags, people and dilemmas. In my studio, London, April 12, 2023

The Reservists are leaders of public opinion * An active integral part of the civil protest against ”The Reform’ and the coup d’état held in Israel (without that official title), 2023

“The Reservist”: “Democracy or Rebellion”, are seen on the high cliffs of the Judean Mountains.

The Reservists with their abilities as skilled field personnel – raised signs throughout the country.

Sign: “Democracy or Rebellion”, on the high cliffs of the Judean Mountains

They shake the country with direct messages and boldly in their own way, in demonstrations throughout from north to south. From Chiefs of Staff to unknown soldiers, heroes, who risk their lives when necessary – express their opinion and leave an active and proactive mark in demonstrations and current public affairs in Israel.

The people’s army – only in a democracy!” The leaders of the reserve protest said in Bnei Brak, March 2023

The people’s army – only in democracy!”

Heroes as always!

On 17 February 2023, the campaign of Yom Kippur fighters against ‘The Reform’ was stopped, with a tank towed all the way from The Golan Heights * The tank was taken without permission.

A tank towed from The Golan Heights , on a heroic journey, brings up forgotten pain – a thunderous action against the ‘Reform’!
Photographer: Aviahu Shapira

There is a dilemma between the spirit of volunteerism of The Reservists and their going out as first in every mission, and their going out openly against ‘The Reform’ that goes against the High Court, they go against the coup d’état, against the destruction of the democracy with the “Salami method” system, rewriting draconian laws, and as a whole turning the State of Israel into a dictatorship and a Halacha state.

Close-up: “The Reservist” goes to ‘battle’ this time for saving the country from dictatorship.

Day by day and hour by hour, with security volatility and instability in the country and in the region, The Reservists make difficult decisions and go to their dangerous positions, as the ‘people’s army’ and when ordered, and in addition go to demonstrations against ‘The Reform’ and the coup d’état!

“Freedom in our country” – the military men, the fighters of 73, once again went head in the front of the camp – proudly displayed the Declaration of Independence and the Menorah.
